5 Instagram Updates You Need to Know Right Now

If keeping up with Instagram lately feels like a full-time job, that’s because it basically is.

Instagram is rolling out new features, Meta is putting more creator tools behind paid subscriptions, AI is becoming baked into the platform, and the way people discover content continues to change.

And as someone who has spent more than a decade in social media marketing, I can tell you this: you do not need to jump on every new Instagram feature.

You do need to know which changes could actually affect how you grow your audience, get discovered and turn your content into revenue.

So let’s talk about some of the biggest Instagram updates happening right now and what I think creators, founders and business owners should actually do with them.

1. Clickable Links Are Coming to Organic Instagram Reels

This one stopped me in my tracks.

Meta announced Meta One on September 15, a new subscription service across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Meta AI. Creator and business bundles start at $14.99 per month, but one of the biggest features is reserved for the Advanced plan, which starts at $49.99 per month.

Advanced subscribers can add links directly to organic posts and Reels.

Read that again.

Clickable. Links. In. Reels.

Until now, getting someone from an Instagram Reel to your website usually required an extra step.

  • “Link in bio.”

  • “Comment GUIDE and I’ll DM it to you.”

  • “Check my Stories for the link.”

Those strategies aren't necessarily going away, but being able to put a clickable link directly on organic content could dramatically shorten the path between discovery and conversion.

Imagine posting a Reel about your new course and linking directly to the sales page.

  • Or sharing a podcast clip and linking directly to the episode.

  • Or talking about your free guide and letting someone download it without hunting through your bio.

For businesses and creators using Instagram to actually generate revenue, this could be a BIG deal.

There is a catch: you have to pay for it.

Meta One's Advanced creator and business plan starts at $49.99 per month and also includes Story scheduling up to 30 days in advance, exportable analytics, deeper audience insights and team account access without sharing your password. Meta says pricing and availability can vary by region and account.

My take: If Instagram is an actual revenue-generating channel for your business, I would keep a very close eye on this feature. The ability to better track the journey from content → click → conversion could make that $49.99 much easier to justify.

But I wouldn't pay for it simply because it's new.

The tool only becomes valuable if you have somewhere strategic to send people.

Which brings me to something I talk about constantly on Call Her Creator: followers are great, but what are you doing with the attention once you have it? Here’s how to create a profitable social media funnel

Your content should eventually move people somewhere: your email list, podcast, product, service, community or offer.

2. Instagram Is Making the “Follow” Button Harder to Miss

Meta One also includes another interesting growth feature: a more prominent Follow button on Reels, along with the ability to automatically send follow invitations to people who engage with your content.

This matters because Instagram growth has increasingly become a game of reaching people who don't already follow you.

A Reel getting 100,000 views feels exciting.

But if nobody follows you afterward?

You rented attention. You didn't necessarily build an audience.

Making the Follow button more prominent could help creators turn more of that discovery traffic into actual community.

The strategy on our side doesn't really change, though.

Your content still needs to give someone a reason to think:

“Wait. I want more from this person.”

That means recognizable topics, repeatable content series and a clear point of view.

Going viral isn't the same thing as becoming known. Here’s 3 ways to get SEEN this week online and grow your online presence.

3. Instagram Is Giving Users More Control Over Their Algorithm

Instagram has also been expanding its “Your Algorithm” controls, which allow users to tell Instagram which topics they want to see more or less of. Instagram has expanded these controls beyond Reels and into the main feed, while continuing to test additional ways for users to influence their recommendations.

For creators, I think this reinforces something I've been screaming about:

Your niche isn't dead. Generic content is.

Instagram needs to understand what your content is about so it can figure out who might want to see it.

And humans need to understand what you're about so they have a reason to follow you.

You don't have to talk about ONE microscopic topic forever. But if one day you're posting business advice, the next day you're sharing random recipes, then you're talking about skincare, then suddenly you're teaching Instagram strategy... you're making it harder for both people and the platform to understand why they should come back.

Think less about putting yourself in a tiny niche box and more about becoming recognizable.

What topics do you want your name associated with?

That's the better question.

4. Tagged Posts Can Now Become Part of Your Main Instagram Grid

Instagram recently introduced the ability for users to add posts they're tagged in directly to their main profile grid, rather than leaving them tucked away exclusively inside the tagged-content section.

This might sound like a tiny aesthetic update.

For creators and personal brands, I think it's much more interesting.

Your Instagram profile is becoming less about only showing what you post and more about curating the ecosystem around your brand.

Think:

  • Podcast appearances.

  • Speaking engagements.

  • Brand collaborations.

  • Features.

  • Client collaborations.

  • Events.

  • Content another creator posted with you.

Instead of creating another “OMG I was featured!” post yourself, you may be able to let the original post become part of your profile.

For founders especially, this turns your Instagram grid into something closer to a living credibility page.

And I am VERY into that.

5. Your Instagram Analytics Are Getting More Sophisticated

Another change I think marketers should pay attention to isn't nearly as sexy as clickable Reel links, but it might be more useful.

Instagram's data ecosystem has continued expanding to include metrics around reposts, follows and unfollows, and Reel skip rate.

Please stop looking at likes as your primary indicator of whether content “worked.”

A post can get fewer likes and still:

  • Generate followers.

  • Get reposted.

  • Drive profile visits.

  • Create leads.

  • Sell something.

  • Build authority.

  • Get sent to 500 people privately.

This is exactly why I want business owners to stop asking, “Did this post go viral?” and start asking, “Did this post do its job?”

Different content should have different jobs.

  • Some content attracts.

  • Some builds trust.

  • Some creates conversation.

  • Some converts.

And some reminds the right person that you exist right before they're ready to buy.

That's a much smarter way to think about Instagram strategy.

The Bigger Instagram Trend I'm Watching

Zoom out from all of these individual updates and there's a bigger shift happening.

Instagram isn't just a place to post pretty pictures anymore.

It's becoming an increasingly sophisticated ecosystem for discovery, audience building, analytics and conversion.

Meta is also clearly betting that serious creators and businesses will pay for professional tools. Meta says its Meta One ecosystem, including its earlier single-app subscription plans, has already reached 15 million subscriptions and trials, though it has not broken out how many of those are paying subscribers.

The question isn't whether Instagram will keep changing.

It will.

The question is whether you're going to spend your entire week trying to keep up with every tiny update or build a strategy strong enough to adapt when the platform changes.

I'm voting for the second one.
